Proof You Can Still Climb – A Personal League Journey to Master
If you’ve ever wondered whether it’s still possible to climb ranks in League of Legends after years of playing, you’re not alone. I want to share my story—the proof you can still climb the ladder and hit Master rank, even at 36 years old, after 15 years playing the game.
Why This Story Matters
I’ve been grinding League since the days ranked seasons didn’t even exist. That means over a decade and a half of playing, evolving, and learning. Despite all those years, I still had that itch to push higher. And this season, I finally hit Master.
So why share this now? If you’re struggling to climb, or feeling like your best days are behind you, I hope my experience shows it’s never too late. With the right mindset and approach, I believe anyone can improve and push past plateaus.
A 15-Year League History
I started playing League around age 20, on the NA server before EUW was even live. Over the years, I consistently hit Diamond every season except a few exceptions due to inactivity or early seasons when I was still learning.
I’ve played mostly top lane but switched to support about 4 years ago to keep a wider champion pool and enjoy the game despite less available playtime. Support allows flexibility, which became crucial as life got busier.
Setting the Goal: Master at 36
This season, I committed myself to one clear goal: reach Master rank.
I set two personal rules:
- No duo queues
- No one-tricking (initially)
I wanted to see if I could do it solo, with a varied champion pool, and without leaning on just one strong pick.
Climbing Strategy: Phases of Growth
My climb happened in three main phases, each teaching me something crucial.
# Phase 1: Variety Support
I played a wide range of supports, from enchanters to initiators. My favorites are Pyke and Rakan, but I picked based on my ADC or matchup. This approach got me to low Diamond, but I stalled there. My win rate hovered just above 50%, and games felt inconsistent.
Some matches felt wasted because my ADC wasn’t strong enough to carry, and my diverse picks were spread too thin to master any one champion.
# Phase 2: Trimmed Champion Pool
I narrowed my pool to five supports:
- Pyke (aggressive and blind pick)
- Milio / Nami (healing and enchanters)
- Leona / Nautilus (engage supports)
This focus helped me climb to Diamond 1 with 86 LP—one win from Master.
But after losing the promotion game and taking a break, I returned cold and fell back to Diamond 3. My inconsistent schedule (often with 3–4 day breaks between games) hurt my momentum.
# Phase 3: The One-Trick Switch
Facing schedule limits and trouble staying warmed up, I broke my no one-trick rule and dedicated myself to mastering Nami, my highest winrate champion.
Why Nami?
- Great blind pick
- High impact with poke and crowd control
- Strong synergy with roaming and team fights
That switch was a game-changer. In just four days and a 9-game win streak, I shot from Diamond 3 to Master, often MVP or ACE in games.
Lessons From My Climb
Here’s what really stuck with me:
- Volume matters. You need enough games to build streaks and learn.
- One-tricking works. It may limit your overall game view, but focusing on one champ is hugely efficient for climbing.
- Flexibility in mindset. I adjusted my rules as needed, which helped me break through rank barriers.
- Consistency beats sporadic play. Regular sessions, even if short, help keep you sharp.

So keep plugging away, keep learning, and when the time is right, perhaps your own proof that you can still climb will come.
