League of Legends saved me from a drug addiction

How League of Legends Saved Me From Drug Addiction

When people hear about video games, especially League of Legends, they often think about mindless hours spent staring at a screen. But for me, League of Legends literally saved my life — pulling me out of a deep drug addiction.

I’m not here to glorify gaming or pretend it’s a miracle cure for everyone. But my story might surprise you, and I hope it sheds light on how something unexpected can sometimes help us find hope.

My Struggle With Addiction

A couple of years ago, I was battling an addiction that completely knocked my life off track. I’m not going to say what drug(s) I was addicted to, but what I can share is how lonely and hopeless life felt. I lost my job, a significant relationship, and my motivation to do much else.

Luckily, my family was supportive, so I wasn’t homeless or starving. But emotionally, I was in a dark place. I kept searching for something to hold onto — some way to feel good without falling deeper into my addiction.

Enter: League of Legends

I’ve played League since I was a teenager, mostly casually. But about a year before I quit drugs, I discovered the competitive side of the game. I set myself a goal: reach Diamond rank. For those who don’t know, Diamond is one of the higher skill tiers — a tough but achievable climb.

What struck me about League was how it lit up my brain’s reward system — much like the drugs, but in a healthier way. The dopamine hit I got from improving in the game was motivating. Plus, I loved the strategy and teamwork involved.

Now, sure, the community can be toxic sometimes, but I learned to mute toxic chats and focus on the game itself. Honestly, people had called me worse things in real life.

Gaming as an Alternative to Getting High

Here’s where it gets interesting: when I was high, I just couldn’t play well. It felt awful messing up in a game I wanted to get better at. So, slowly but surely, the desire to play well started outweighing the urge to get high. It sounds odd, but not playing for a day felt like wasting a precious opportunity to improve.

I went from spending most days feeling miserable and addicted, to dedicating myself to practice, reading guides, watching videos, and climbing the ranks. After some months, I finally hit Challenger — League’s highest rank — and I’d been clean for four months straight.

What I Learned From My Journey

Reaching Challenger gave me a sense of personal achievement I hadn’t felt in a long time. It showed me that with focus and persistence, I could beat more than just other players in a game.

Since then, I’ve realized that the game was a stepping stone, not the end goal. Now that I’ve reached my peak in League, I’m ready to invest more in real life — applying for jobs and building a future.

This journey doesn’t mean gaming is a guaranteed way out for everyone. But it highlights how finding a new passion or challenge can replace harmful habits.

Why This Matters

If you or someone you know is struggling with addiction, know that recovery doesn’t always look the same. For me, a competitive video game filled a void and helped me reclaim my life. Finding an activity that brings joy and purpose can be a powerful tool in fighting addiction.
